DETROIT, Mich. - Detroit scored a goal in the 21st minute as a results of a loose ball off a free kick and then made the goal stand as Cleveland State dropped a 1-0 decision to the Titans on Sunday afternoon at Titan Field.

The loss drops the Vikings to 7-6-2 on the year and 3-2 in league play. Detroit improves to 6-4-4 overall and 3-1-1 in league play.

Cleveland State, which began the day in a first place tie with Milwaukee in the Horizon League standings with nine points, could slip as low as fourth in the league depending on Loyola's outcome against Youngstown State this afternoon.

"I knew going into this match that the team that scored first was going to have an advantage because this was the second game of the weekend," CSU head coach Derrek Falor said. "Detroit was fortunate to get that goal, which allowed them to play back and focus their efforts on the defense."

"I don't think that the score was reflective of our play. I am proud of our kids because they came out to play the second road match of a weekend and were ready to play. I think we had a couple of things working against us that you normally don't have to overcome and we just couldn't put one on the board."

The Titans scored the only goal of the contest at the 20:30 mark when Lauren Roffey tipped in a loose ball in the box off a free kick by Rebekah Dornbos. It was the second goal of the year for Roffey.

The Vikings had two excellent opportunities to score in the match but came away without a goal on both attempts.

Shortly after Detroit took the lead, junior Natalie Waters worked her way into the box on a nice run and appeared to be dragged down by a Titan defender but CSU did not get the call.

The call went against CSU midway through the second half when an apparent game tying goal off a cornerkick was called back as the Vikings were called for being offsides.

"The called back goal was a tough one to accept because Detroit had two defenders hugging the post which meant that we weren't offside on the play. But that is a call you get when you play on the road," Falor said.

Detroit had a 10-5 edge in shots with Kelly Zinkiewich making two saves for CSU. Detroit's Nora Abolins made two saves to record the shutout.

"Kelly played well in goal for us again this afternoon and the one ball that she wasn't able to make a play on proved to be the difference," Falor said. "She got knocked around a bit and took her knocks, especially on set plays, but she really held in there."

The game was a physical contest as Detroit was whistled for 15 fouls while CSU was called for just four.

The Vikings return home for the final time during the 2010 regular season when CSU hosts Wright State beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (October 15) at Krenzler Field. Off
