RICHMOND, Ky. - Cleveland State allowed a pair of goals, including one just 7:22 into the contest as the Vikings dropped a 2-0 decision at Eastern Kentucky on Friday afternoon. The loss, the second straight by CSU, drops the Vikings to 1-3 on the year. EKU improves to 1-3.
"This was a real tough one to sit through because we did not even remotely play to our ability," CSU head coach Derrek Falor said. "We sat back today and let them bring the play to us instead of being the aggressive team that we are capable of being.
"The start of this season has been frustrating. In the past, we have played above our ability in order to achieve some advances for this program but so far this year, we have been the team with the greater ability but we haven't been able to put things together yet.
"We have two days to get ready for Ohio and I will need to find the combination of players who are going to come out ready to play and play at the level that we are capable of," Falor added.
The Vikings found themselves down in the match early when EKU's Lauren Imsande scored from about seven yards out in the 8th minute after Viking netminder Kelly Zinkiewich couldn't get to a crossing pass from the right wing by Carly Muller.
The match turned into a defensive tussle after that as the Colonials held a slight 7-5 lead in shots with EKU edging CSU, 4-3, in shots on goal.
Jessica Goshert extended the EKU lead to 2-0 in the 67th when she headed home a corner kick from teammate Ashley Green.
"Defensively, we were a step slow on the corner," Falor said. "They served it into the box and we didn't react fast enough."
Stephanie Lynch recorded a pair of saves in posting the shutout while Zinkiewich and Shannon Saunders each played in goal for CSU, making one save each.
The Vikings remain on the road this weekend, playing at Ohio University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
