FAIRBORN, Ohio -- Wright State scored in the 70th minute to break open a tie game and hold on for a 2-1 victory over Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon at WSU's Alumni Field.
The loss, Cleveland State's eight straight, dropped the Vikings to 1-9 on the year and 0-1 in Horizon League play. Wright State won for the third time in conference action, improving to 5-4-2 overall and 3-0 in league play.
"We really played pretty well today," CSU head coach. "Both of the goals we allowed came on good, solid plays while we were able to play with them offensively.
"Our biggest problem was adjusting to the field. It had rained during the weekend and there were a number of games on it so the field was very wet, soggy and mushy. It created a difficult surface for us to overcome and really slowed down the match."
Wright State opened the scoring just 2:12 into the contest when Bekah Bonny gathered in a cross from Brittany Persaud and launched a shot from within the box that just found the net inside the far post.
The Vikings perked up after that, evening the match in the 12th minute when Marley Greiner took possession of the ball at midfield and made a nice run, pausing about 22 yards out to blast a shot that beat WSU netminder Meghan Hackerson in the top corner of the net.
The goal was the team-leading third of the season and second of the weekend for Greiner, a junior from Burnaby, British Columbia.
"Marley is really starting to emerge as a play-maker for us. She is able to carry the ball and still finish plays from a distance and her teammates are recognizing that," Falor said.
The match would remain tied until the 69:13 mark when Jen Agueci and Morgan Butler executed the give-and-go with Butler crossing a ball into the box that Jennifer Gilbert gathered and scored from in close.
CSU was out-shot 14-8 in the contest with Kelly Zinkiewich making four saves for the Vikings.
CSU returns home this week to continue Horizon League play against Detroit at 7:00 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 2) and vs. Loyola at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 4) at Krenzler Field.
