FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Jennifer Wieand's return from knee surgery that cost her the entire 2007 season became complete on Tuesday when she scored CSU's final two goals in a come-from-behind 5-4 overtime win at IPFW.
Wieand, who also had an assist, helped the Vikings rally from a 4-2 second half deficit, scoring with just 1:31 left in regulation to force overtime before netting the game-winner with 6:51 left in the second overtime period.
"I am very happy for Jenni because of how much she has gone through to get back on the field," head coach Derrek Falor said. "She showed us tonight exactly how much we missed her offensive creativity on the field last year.
The win, the first road victory in school history, was also the first overtime victory ever for the Vikings. Heading into the contest, CSU was 0-31-1 all-time on the road and 0-2-1 in matches that went to overtime.
The Vikings opened the match quickly, scoring twice in the first 23 minutes to take a 2-0 lead.
Shayna Back opened the scoring just 8:15 into the contest when she gathered in a cross from Wieand and knocked home a shot from seven yards out in the middle.
Abbie Kakias made it 2-0 at the 22:25 mark when she beat IPFW netminder Malinda Holmer to the short side from right hand corner of the box.
Brittany Saylor put IPFW on the scoreboard in the 37th minute when she chipped a shot high from five yards out over CSU goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich.
The Mastodons stormed out of halftime, adding three goals in the first 16:49 of the second half, including two just 107 seconds apart, to take a 4-2 lead.
"Our defense just kind of fell asleep," Falor said. "It was like the St. Bonaventure match all over again where we just let IPFW take charge of the match without putting up a fight."
Fortunately for the Vikings, CSU had time to regroup and rally.
Freshman Nicole Howard started the CSU comeback in the 69th minute when she beat an IPFW defender down the right side and blasted a shot from 10 yards out that deflected off the hands of Holmer and found its way into the net to trim the IPFW lead to 4-3.
With time running out in regulation, the Vikings got the break they needed when Sylvia Olsby fed a pass ahead to Wieand, who broke in all alone on goal to even the match at 4-4 and force overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Wieand put the match away when she took a pass on the left side from Back and, after taking several dribbles toward goal, lofted a shot from 15 yards out that beat Holmer to the far side.
"The goal that won the match is a great example of how well our forwards interact with each other and create scoring opportunities," Falor said. "Shayna had the ball about 40 yards away from the goal but Jen flashed to the ball, gathered in the pass and made a move to net that resulted in a great opportunity.
"This was a tough match for us tonight, but it shows how far this program has come. In past seasons, we didn't have enough offense to come back from two goals down yet tonight, we didn't panic and continued to play our style and tried to create opportunities. It was a very good sign for this team to complete the comeback."
The Vikings will have little time to celebrate as they will continue their three-match in three different states road trip this week by playing at Temple on Friday (Sept. 7) and at Delaware State on Sunday (Sept. 9).
