CLEVELAND, Ohio - Three St. Bonaventure players scored goals and CSU was limited to just three second half shots as the Vikings were blanked by the Bonnies, 3-0, in the opening round of the CSU Fall Classic at Krenzler Field.
DePaul, who Cleveland State will play on Sunday at 3:00 p.m., defeated Ohio, 2-0 in the other opening round contest.
Despite controlling play for the majority of the first half, CSU trailed 1-0 at the intermission when the Bonnies' Marilyn Wargo was left unprotected around the back post on a Jamie Dentino free kick from the left corner. Wargo put her head on the kick, directing the ball past Viking netminder Kelly Zinkiewich at the 23:38 mark.
Cleveland State outshot St. Bonaventure, 7-4, in the first half, forcing Bonnie goalie Amanda Prestigiacomo into making three first half saves.
"The problems that we have had defensively in each of our exhibition matches popped up again this afternoon and hurt us," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We gave up an easy goal on a set play early in the match which is something that we can't afford to do. Those goals always come back to haunt you"
"I am not totally displeased with our effort. We created several opportunities in the first half but unfortunately, we didn't have anything to show for them because our forwards had trouble connecting with each other today and couldn't finish the run.
The tone of the match changed after the intermission as the St. Bonaventure offense continually took the ball at the Viking defense, creating numerous scoring opportunities. Zinkiewich, who was making her CSU debut, made 10 saves, but it was not enough.
"Kelly played very well in goal, especially when you consider that it was her first collegiate match. We put her in a tough position defensively on a number of occasions, especially early in the second half, and she made some very good decisions," Falor added.
St. Bonaventure upped its lead to 2-0 in the 61st minute when Katie Shelofsky fed Courtney Bosse in the slot down the left sideline. After two dribbles, Bosse lofted a shot from 15 yards over a charging Zinkiewich and into the back corner of the net.
The final goal of the contest came at the 81:04 mark when Kristin Sotak finished a long run down the left side by beating Zinkiewich to the far side off a breakaway, Zinkiewich had again been forced to charge off the line but couldn't get to the ball until after Sotak's shot.
St. Bonaventure finished the contest with a 16-10 shot advantage, including a 12-3 edge in the second half.
