INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Angie Pilat scored a pair of goals in the first four minutes of the second half and the Vikings could not recover as CSU dropped a 2-1 decision at IUPUI on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 3).
The loss, CSU's third straight after opening the season with a 6-0 win over Delaware State, dropped the Vikings' record to 1-3. IUPUI improved to 2-1-1.
After the two teams played a scoreless first half, the goals came quickly at the start of the second stanza.
Pilat opened the scoring just 68 seconds into the second half when she finished off a loose ball in the box from just six yards out.
Pilat came back moments later, beating the Viking defense on a short run and scoring to the far post past CSU netminder Erin Withrow at the 48:21 mark.
Cleveland State closed to within 2-1 at the 52:07 mark when IUPUI goalie Jamie Farrell couldn't control an Ashley Walchack shot and Shayna Back scored on the rebound.
"We played poorly for three minutes today and it cost us," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We were able to pick up our intensity during the last 40 minutes, but we still aren't the kind of team that is able to give up two easy goals and come back from it.
"I wasn't happy with our intensity in the first half. We let the play come to us and didn't play the ball in the midfield like we need to do to be successful."
One bright spot in the match continues to be the play of Back, a junior who played primarily on defense during her first two seasons. After not scoring a single point while starting 34 games before this year, Back has taken advantage of her move to the midfield this year. In just four matches, she has already set school records for goals (4) and points (9).
The Vikings are back in action this week when they conclude their current five-match road swing when they play Nicholls State (Sept. 8) and South Alabama (Sept. 10) this weekend at the Kelme Port City Classic in Mobile, Ala.
