CLEVELAND, Ohio - After going down 1-0 at the half, Cleveland State gave a valiant second-half effort but couldn't find the equalizer, losing to Akron, 1-0, on Friday night at Krenzler Field. The Vikings (1-6) have now dropped six straight contests, including three straight by a 1-0 score.
"We played hard, but we continue to make the little errors that cost us," head coach Derrek Falor said. "I don't think we can afford to make mistakes because we have trouble recovering from them. It just seems like we just have one moment in every match where we slip up."
The Zips (6-0) got the game-winner at the 33:06 mark when Jessica Fix found the back of the net unassisted. Her shot came from about 10 yards out and slipped by CSU goalie Erin Withrow just inside the right post.
After the break, the Vikings came out and controlled the tempo, outshooting Akron, 6-5, and threatening to score on several occasions. Yet, CSU couldn't find the game-tying goal.
"Our offense wasn't dynamic enough," Falor said. "We would make a good run and get to the top of the box and then something would fall apart. We played fairly well, but, again, it's the little things that are killing us.
Junior Heather Clapacs posted a team-high three shots to lead the Vikings. Four other players would each record one attempt for CSU.
"Heather played well in the middle and I thought Danielle Ultican possessed the ball well," Falor said. "And I think our back four played fairly well.
"We stayed composed and denied a lot of their options. Unfortunately, we just weren't threatening enough on offense."
The Vikings will travel south down I-71 to in-state foe Cincinnati on Sunday (Sept. 17). Kickoff against the Bearcats is slated for 12:30 p.m.
