ANN ARBOR, Mich – The Cleveland State men's tennis team begin defense of its Horizon League Tournament title Saturday, opening #HLTennis Tournament play with a 4-2 win over Tennessee State in the semifinals. With the win, the Vikings have advanced to Sunday's championship match, with first serve set for 3:00 p.m. against Belmont.
Saturday's appearance in the #HLTennis semifinals marked the 19
th straight appearance for the Vikings, while Sunday's match will mark the 10
th trip to the finals for the Vikings over the last 13 years.
The Vikings were able to get out to the early 1-0 advantage after picking up the doubles point, with
Lincoln Battle and
Devin Boyer earning a 6-3 win at the top of the lineup, and
Carl Gedlitschka and
Cole Chappell posting a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot.
Cleveland State then added to its advantage with a 6-2, 6-0 win from
Nico Jamison at No. 4 singles, before Tennessee State evened the match with a pair of wins at the top two spots in the lineup.
Maxime Aremon then put the Vikings back on top at 3-2 following a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles, while Chappell clinched the match for Cleveland State with a 6-4, 7-5 win at the No. 3 spot.
Jamison and Aremon both recorded their 20
th singles win of the season, while Chappell moved into a tie for ninth place on the CSU Single-Season Wins List with 26 wins this year.
