Cleveland State Lacrosse Returns to the Road for Marquette

Opening Whistle
Cleveland State returns to the road for a third time as the Green and White takes on Marquette tomorrow at noon.

Last Game Out
The Vikings upended Bellarmine 16-10 in the home opener on Tuesday as redshirt sophomore set the program record for goals (8) and tied the record points (8) along with shots on goal (10). The Knights lone lead was 1-0 before the Green and White took control.

Jacob Lubrant was second on the team in points with five behind two goals and three assists. Amiri Austin had four points on the day with two goals and two assists. Alex Van Voorhis dished out a team-best four assists.

Robbie Stewart went 16-of-25 in the faceoff circle to go along with a game-best nine ground balls. Griffin Valli forced a game-best three caused turnovers. Justin Dalum earned his first win in the cage after making 12 saves in 56 minutes.

About Marquette
The Golden Eagles are 1-2 on the year and are coming off a 22-9 loss at Notre Dame on Saturday. Their lone win came on Feb. 8 against Detroit. Nolan Rappis leads the team in points with 12 on five goals and seven assists and set the program record for points in a game (10) against Detroit with five goals and five assists. Bobby O'Grady is tops in goals with six, while Adam Slager has nine ground balls. Lucas Lawas has started every game in the cage and has made 27 saves.

Series History
This will be the fourth meeting between these two teams, with the last coming in 2021 as Marquette won 10-5 at home. The Golden Eagles have won the last two games and are 2-1 all-time.

The Numbers
  • This is the ninth season of CSU lacrosse and the sixth under coach German.
  • The Vikings are 6-26 all-time in February.
  • Cleveland is 2-7 after winning their first game of the year.
 
On This Date
Tomorrow will be the second time Cleveland State has played on February 22, with the first time coming in 2020 as the Vikings defeated No. 16 Air Force 12-11 in overtime.
 
A Helping Hand
Alex Van Voorhis now has 35 career assists and is four back of tying Gannon Matthews for third all-time. Michael Wilson has 62 assists all-time to lead the way which was done from 2018-21.
 
Getting it Done in the Circle
Robbie Stewart has 152 career faceoff wins, which is the fourth most all-time. Danny Tesler leads the way with 478 set from 2017-20.

The Start of a New Conference
Cleveland State will begin its new journey in the NEC after spending the past three seasons in the ASUN. The NEC makes its return after stopping in 2022 and will feature eight teams, including three former members of the ASUN: Robert Morris, Cleveland State, and Detroit.

Robert Morris was picked as the favorite to win the conference after receiving three first-place votes. The Vikings were right behind with two first-place votes, and LIU was third with two first-place votes. VMI claimed the final first-place tally to come in fourth.

The top four teams in the regular season standings advance to the NEC Tournament from May 1-3, which will be hosted by the regular season champion.
