CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State (3-4, 1-0) opened NEC play with a 14-6 home victory over Mercyhurst (2-7, 0-1) on Saturday afternoon. The Green and White have now won three consecutive games.
The Lakers opened the scoring before the Vikings rattled off four consecutive goals to lead 4-1 at the end of the quarter.
Brennen Hickey accounted for three goals, and
Creed McDonald had the other.
Three different Cleveland State players netted a goal to open the second quarter, stretching the margin to 7-1 with 10:24 remaining in the first half. Following a Lakers goal, Hickey scored the next two goals, and
Logan Angel bagged his first collegiate goal to lead 10-2 at halftime.
Mercyhurst ran off the first three goals of the third quarter, closing the gap to 10-5 with 5:40 showing.
Ethan Erker stopped the run before the visitors got one last goal with 29 seconds left to trail 11-6 heading into the fourth.
All three goals in the fourth quarter belonged to the Green and White as Cleveland State won, 14-6.
Drew Graves and
Sebastian West each collected their first collegiate goal.
Robbie Stewart went 15-of-20 in the faceoff circle with seven ground balls.
Seth Alejandrino tied the program record for caused turnovers with six and scooped up six ground balls.
Hickey finished with seven points on five goals and two assists. Erker also collected multiple goals on the day.
Oliver Vanyo moved to 3-0 in the cage after making 12 saves.
