Cleveland State Lacrosse Faces Bellarmine in Home Opener

Opening Whistle
After playing on the road in consecutive games to start the season, the Vikings will open home play against former ASUN foe Bellarmine, tomorrow at 3 p.m.

Last Game Out
Cleveland State was defeated by the reigning back-to-back national champions, No. 1 Notre Dame, 24-6, on Wednesday evening. Freshman Brennen Hickey netted a goal, raising his team lead to three on the year. Robbie Stewart finished the game with 13 faceoff wins and seven of the team's 25 ground balls. Griffin Valli had two of the three caused turnovers, and Justin Dalum made nine saves in goal.

About Bellarmine
The Knights will be playing their third straight road game and are 2-2 on the year after beating Canisius 13-8 in snowy conditions on Saturday. Bellarmine just the Vikings scored four goals in a game at Ohio State. John Alie leads the attack with 12 goals and three assists for a team-best 15 points. Ezra Moore has handed out six team-leading assists. Aidan Fearn is 46-of-76 in the circle with 23 ground balls. Nolan Hudnut has started every game in goal and has made 43 saves.

Series History
The Vikings will have a chance to even the series with a victory as Bellarmine holds a 5-4 edge. These two teams met twice last season, with the Knights winning at home in the regular season, 14-9, and Cleveland State winning the ASUN Quarterfinal matchup in Colorado, 15-12.

Tomorrow will be the second time the Green and White have played on February 18, with its only other time in their first season beating Baldwin Wallace at home, 9-2.

A Helping Hand
Alex Van Voorhis took sole possession of fourth in the career assists category with 31. He is now eight back of tying Gannon Matthews for third and 31 back of Michael Wilson's 62, which was established from 2018-21.

Getting it Done in the Circle
Robbie Stewart has 136 career faceoff wins, which is the fourth most all-time. Danny Tesler leads the way with 478 set from 2017-20.
 
The Start of a New Conference
Cleveland State will begin its new journey in the NEC after spending the past three seasons in the ASUN. The NEC makes its return after stopping in 2022 and will feature eight teams, including three former members of the ASUN: Robert Morris, Cleveland State, and Detroit.

Robert Morris was picked as the favorite to win the conference after receiving three first-place votes. The Vikings were right behind with two first-place votes, and LIU was third with two first-place votes. VMI claimed the final first-place tally to come in fourth.

The top four teams in the regular season standings advance to the NEC Tournament from May 1-3, which will be hosted by the regular season champion.
