CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cori Coleman posted a career-high 21 points and Shalonda Winton recorded her 21st double-digit scoring game of the season, but the Cleveland State women's basketball team came up short against No. 11 Green Bay, falling to the Phoenix, 90-59.
Along with her 21 points, Coleman tallied six rebounds and two assists, while Winton added 13 points and six rebounds. Haley Schmitt also tied her career-high against Green Bay, posting six points and five rebounds.
During the first half Cleveland State came within five points of the Phoenix at the 6:23 mark (26-21) following a 9-2 run that included four points from Schmitt. Green Bay responded with a 10-2 run of their own, extending their lead to 36-23 with 3:28 left to play. With just 19 seconds left in the first half, Takima Keane sank a three-pointer, which brought the Vikings within single digits (40-31) going into the halftime break.
Cleveland State was able to keep the Green Bay offense in check during the opening minutes of the second half, as they held the Phoenix lead to single digits for the first three minutes. Six unanswered Phoenix points extended their lead to 15 (51-36) with 16:30 left to play, and Green Bay would hold at least a 13 point lead for the rest of the contest.
With nine minutes left to play, Coleman posted seven straight points for the Vikings, closing the gap to 75-53. Coleman, who tallied the first 20-point game of her career Thursday evening, posted nine of Cleveland State's final 13 points. Over the final six minutes, Green Bay outscored the Vikings 15-6, earning the 90-59 victory.
The Vikings shot 38-percent from the floor (21-54) Thursday evening, while the Phoenix were 31-for-66 (.470). CSU tallied 13 assists on its 21 made field goals, including five from Winton.
Cleveland State will close out its brief homestand on Saturday (Feb. 18), as the Vikings host Milwaukee at 1:30 p.m. Saturday's game will serve as CSU's Play 4 Kay game, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
