CLEVELAND, Ohio - Shalonda Winton tallied her ninth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, but the Cleveland State women's basketball team was not able to overcome the second-half rally from Detroit, as they fell to the Titans, 50-43. With the loss, the Vikings are now 8-12 on the season and 3-6 in the Horizon League, while Detroit is now 10-11 overall and 6-3 in league action.
Winton's 12 rebounds also marked her 11th double-digit rebounding game of the season, and she now has 654 rebounds on her career. Cori Coleman added eight points for Cleveland State, while Takima Keane, Janelle Adams and Destinee Blue each posted four points.
After an even first half that featured four ties and six lead changes, the Titans and Vikings went into halftime with the score knotted at 17.
The two teams traded baskets once again during the opening minutes of the second half until Detroit was able to post six straight points over a two-minute span. The Titans gained a four-point (27-23) lead from that run with 13:43 left, just the fifth time that either team held more than a two-point advantage during the contest.
The Vikings got three-pointers from Winton and Kiersten Green at the 9:11 and 7:40 marks, respectively, as they closed the gap to one point both times. Eight straight Titan points extended Detroit's lead to nine points with 4:12 left to play though.
Coleman was finally able to bring the Vikings within three points with just 23 seconds left, after posting five straight points for Cleveland State on three free-throws and a layup. That would be as close as the Vikings would get though, as Detroit ended the contest on a 5-1 run, with all five points coming at the free-throw line.
The Vikings struggled from the field Saturday, as they shot just 25-percent from the floor (13-52). Combined, both teams recorded just 29 field goals, as Detroit was 16-for-42 from the field (.381). CSU also had a tough time at the free-throw line against the Titans, as they were just 14-of-23 (.609).
Detroit had two players score in double-figures Saturday, Shareta Brown with 20 points and Yar Shayok with 14.
Cleveland State returns to action next week, as the Vikings are set to host Butler at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 2) and Valparaiso at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 4).
