DETROIT, Mich. - Shawnita Garland scored 32 points, one shy of her career-high, to help Cleveland State earn a 74-71 victory over Detroit on Saturday afternoon in Calihan Hall.

Garland, who scored 33 points in CSU's win over the Titans earlier this season, made 13-of-21 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three point. She added three rebounds and two steals and wound up going 13-for-16 from three point in two games against Detroit this season.

Shalonda Winton added 12 points and 12 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season, while Takima Keane scored 11 points with five rebounds. Honesty King added nine points and a career-best eight rebounds off the bench in her second straight strong performance.

The win improves the Vikings to 16-10 overall and keeps CSU in fourth place in the Horizon League (9-6), just one-half game behind third place Wright State who beat Youngstown State by three points today.

Detroit fell to 11-14 overall and 5-9 in league play.

Detroit was aggressive in the early going, attacking the basket twice in the first minute and drawing two fouls on the Vikings. The Titans made three of the four free throws to take a 3-0 lead less than a minute in.

But a Takima Keane layup at the 17:19 mark got the Vikings on the board and gave them their first lead of the contest. CSU's lead would get to as many as six at the 12:11 mark as consecutive three pointers from Garland, Honesty King and Winton and a layup by Keane gave CSU a 19-13 lead.

The advantage was still three points (25-22) with 6:56 to play following a Garland jumper, but UDM used eight straight points to regain a 30-25 lead with just over four minutes to play in the half. The Titans led at the half, 39-35, in a stanza that featured 12 lead changes.

Two three pointers by Detroit's Cherridy Thorton at the start of the second half helped the Titans maintain a five point edge (45-40) less than two minutes in. However, Garland sparked a 13-3 run with nine points, including two three pointers and a three point play, that put the Vikings back ahead, 53-48 lead with 13:50 to play.

UDM rallied to tie things at 55-55 and with the score still knotted at 60-60, CSU scored eight unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game, 68-60, on a steal and layup by Garland with just over five minutes to play.

However, the Titans were not done, scoring eight straight points to tie the game at 68-68 with 1:45 to play. King gave the Vikings a 70-68 lead when she grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a put back and then grabbed a defensive rebound and fed a streaking Garland for a fastbreak layup that gave CSU a 72-68 lead with 43 seconds to play.

After another defensive stop, Detroit was forced to foul and Winton went to the line and sank two free throws for a 74-68 lead with 23 seconds left. Dominique Dixon hit a three pointer with six seconds left to slice the UDM deficit to 74-71 and after Adams missed the front end of a one-and-one, Jalesa Jones' desperation heave from halfcourt was off the mark and the Vikings swept the season series from Detroit.

CSU finished 30-of-63 (.476) from the field and hit 8-of-16 (.500) from three point, while committing just 13 turnovers.

The Vikings are back in action just one time next week, hosting Youngstown State at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 26) in the Wolstein Center.
