Cleveland, Ohio - Takima Keane tied her career-high with 20 points and the Vikings posted 46 points during the second half, but the Cleveland State rally would fall short as CSU dropped an 84-74 decision to Akron Wednesday evening. The Vikings are now 2-4 on the season, while Akron improves to 4-3.
After falling behind 31-14 late in the opening period, CSU went on a 14-7 run over the final six minutes to close the gap to 10 points (38-28) before halftime. During that span the Vikings got six points from Destinee Blue, who tallied 18 on the night, and five from Honesty King.
The CSU defense forced a pair of Zips turnovers to begin the second half and the Vikings were able to trim the Akron lead to single digits (38-33) after posting five straight points. Those five points came off of a Blue layup and a King three-pointer, which was her second of the evening.
The two teams traded baskets over the next 1:10 and with back-to-back layups from King and Blue the Vikings were able to make it a two-point game (44-42) with 14:47 left to play. That would be as close as CSU would get though, as the Zips went on an 11-2 run over the next 3:08 to extend their lead to 11 points at 55-44.
Cleveland State was able to close the gap to single digits multiple times throughout the remainder of the contest, but the Zips, who shot 56-percent from the floor, were able to make shots of their own down the stretch and came away with the 10-point victory.
Keane, who posted her second 20-point game of her career tonight, scored eight of her points during the final three minutes of the contest, including a pair of three-pointers. Along with Blue, two other Vikings joined Keane in the double-digit scoring column, as King finished with 12 and Janelle Adams added 10.
Cleveland State will close out their three-game homestand on Monday (Dec. 5) when the Vikings host Ohio University at 7:00 p.m. in the Wolstein Center.
