CLEVELAND, Ohio - Kailey Klein scored all 19 of her points in the second half and added nine rebounds to help lead Cleveland State to a 73-61 victory over Milwaukee in Horizon League action on Monday night in the Wolstein Center.
CSU, which snapped a two-game losing streak, improved to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Panthers fell to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Shawnita Garland added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Shalonda Winton scored 10 points with five rebounds. Stephaine Crosley scored nine points and added a game-high eight rebounds, including eight on the offensive end.
"I thought we got off to a slow start offensively, but we were doing a good job on defense and that allowed us to keep the lead," head coach Kate Peterson Abiad said. "At halftime, we talked about coming out, being aggressive and taking better care of the basketball and I thought we were able to do that.
"Milwaukee did a good job of taking away cutters to the basket, but we were able to find open players on skip passes and hand offs for penetration and that was key.
The first half proved to be a tight affair throughout with neither team claiming a lead of more than five points and the lead changing hands four times.
The Panthers jumped out to an 8-4 lead six minutes in, equaling their largest lead of the half. UWM still led by four (10-6) with 13 minutes to play, but four different players scored for CSU as part of an 8-0 run that gave the Vikings a 14-10 lead with 9:27 to play in the half.
The Vikings led the rest of the half, pushing the advantage to as many as five points three different times, including a 30-25 lead at the half.
Klein opened the second half with a three-pointer to give CSU and eight point advantage before the Vikings extended the lead to double digits (42-32) on a Jessica Roque jumper with 16 minutes left.
However, a 14-5 run by the Panthers allowed them to climb all the way back to within one (47-46) on Lindsay Laur's jumper with 10 minutes remaining.
But Garland keyed an 11-1 CSU run, scoring seven points, to put CSU back on top by 10 points (58-48) with 6:17 left. The Panthers had one more run, cutting the Viking lead back to five points (60-55) with three minutes left.
Klein took over from there, hitting a jumper, two free throws and a layup to push CSU's lead back to 11 (66-55) and Angel Roque's free throw with 53 seconds left gave CSU a 12 point lead and ice the game.
CSU was dominant on the glass, holding a 44-30 rebounding edge, including 16 on the offensive end that led to 19 second chance points.
The Vikings will be back in action on Thursday (Jan. 7) when CSU plays at Loyola at 8:00 p.m. EST. CSU then heads to UIC for a 4:00 p.m. EST contest on Saturday (Jan. 9).
