CLEVELAND, Ohio - Green Bay's Kayla Tetschlag and Julie Wojta combined for 48 points to lead No. 20/22 Green Bay to a 78-60 victory over Cleveland State in the Horizon League opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon in the Wolstein Center.

CSU fell to 5-7 overall (0-1 HL), while Green Bay remained perfect at 12-0 (1-0 HL).

Shawnita Garland led the Vikings with 22 points, while Angel Roque scored 12 and Kailey Klein added 11 points and six boards.

Wojta led all scorers with 24 points, hitting 9-of-10 from the field, while Tetschlag chipped in 21 points.

"I thought we played well in the first half, but they threw a 2-3 trapping zone at us in the second half and we never adjusted to it," head coach Kate Peterson Abiad said. "We did a good job of executing against their man-to-man, but then we couldn't take care of the ball against their trap."

The Vikings finished with 24 turnovers.

"You can't turn the ball over that many times against a team like Green Bay," Peterson Abiad said. "We gave away 24 possessions and we have to find a way to take better care of the ball.

"It's tough opening league play against a team like Green Bay and we need to find a way to bounce back quickly. We have three more games over the next week and have to find a way to go out and compete like we know we are capable of."

Green Bay raced out quickly, scoring the first eight points of the game, only to watch the Vikings come back with seven straight to cut the lead to 8-7 with 12:56 left in the half.

However, the Phoenix would open up their biggest lead of the half (31-18) when Julie Wojta hit a jumper at the 6:41 mark.

The lead was still 11 points (37-26) with just over a minutes to play in the half, but Angel Roque nailed a jumper and then hit a three-pointer with six seconds to play to slice CSU's deficit to six points (37-31) at the half.

A quick 10-4 run by the Phoenix to open the second half allowed them to take a 47-35 lead on a Celeste Hoewisch three-pointer less than four minutes in. However, the Vikings answered with another run of their own, scoring eight straight points to slice the lead to 47-43 (13:28) on a Jessica Roque three-pointer.

But, as was the case most of the afternoon, the Phoenix answered with a run of their own, scoring seven straight to regain a double-digit lead (54-43) with 11:55 left.

CSU could get no closer than nine points the rest of the way. The Vikings shot a respectable .457 (21-46) from the field, hitting eight three-pointers. However, Green Bay's defense allowed the Phoenix to take 14 more shots than CSU, hitting 29-of-60 (.483) from the field.

Green Bay turned the ball over just 15 times, while holding a slim 32-31 advantage on the boards.

The Vikings will be back in action on Monday (Jan. 4) when CSU continues league play against Milwaukee at 7:00 p.m. in the Wolstein Center.
