Final Stats
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -
Cleveland State was done in by a sloppy and sluggish first half in a 65-55 loss at Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings drop to 5-16 overall and 2-6 in the Horizon League with their fourth consecutive defeat, while the Penguins improve to 5-13, 3-5.
CSU committed 17 turnovers while going just 4-for-20 (20.0 percent) in the opening 20 minutes. YSU took advantage of a prolonged scoreless stretch by the Vikings (8:22) to turn a slim 9-6 lead into a 24-6 bulge with 5:35 remaining, eventually taking a 35-15 margin into the locker room.
The Penguins kept CSU at bay the entire second half, maintaining their double-digit margin the entire time.
"We need to learn how to play better on the road," CSU head coach Kate Peterson said. "We have to come out with more energy and a better focus and cut down on the unforced turnovers. I thought we played hard in the second half, but 20 points is just too much to overcome."
Brittany Korth led the Vikings with 11 points, five rebounds and four steals off of the bench. Chenara Wilson added 11 points and seven boards, while Kailey Klein tallied 11 points, six boards and a pair of steals.
YSU's Jessica Schloemp had a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds, while Monique Godfrey notched 16 points and six assists.
Youngstown State shot 46.0 percent for the game (23-50), while limiting the Vikings to a 20-for-54 effort (37.0 percent). CSU held a 35-29 advantage on the boards.
Cleveland State is in action again next Thursday (Feb. 1), when the Vikings host Loyola at 5:00 p.m. The CSU men follow against the Ramblers at 7:30 p.m.
