CLEVELAND -
Cleveland State came up short in its first home game of 2006, as Horizon League leading UW-Green Bay earned a 66-51 decision on Thursday night in the Wolstein Center. With the win, the Phoenix improves to 38-3 all-time against the Vikings.
Cleveland State (3-12, 1-3 HL) led 9-4 after the first four minutes, however UW-Green Bay (11-3, 4-0 HL) answered with a 14-0 run over the next six minutes to take a lead it would never relinquish. CSU cut a 38-25 halftime deficit to eight (44-36) with 12:44 remaining, but could get no closer as the Phoenix pushed the lead back to as much as 16.
Both teams struggled from the floor, as neither was able to shoot above 40 percent. UW-Green Bay connected on just 37.3 percent of its field goals (22-59), including an 11-for-36 effort from behind the three-point arc (30.6 percent), while CSU was 17-for-51 from the field (33.3 percent).
The biggest difference in the game was in points off of turnovers, as the Phoenix enjoyed an 18-3 advantage.
"Our game plan was to force them to beat us from the outside," CSU head coach Kate Peterson said. "Our problem was a seven-minute stretch where we went scoreless and they were more physical than us. I thought we got some great looks. The opportunity to win was there, we just couldn't take advantage of it."
Dominique Butler led CSU with a career-high 15 points and six rebounds, while Brittany Korth added 12 points, six boards, four assists and three steals.
Nicole Soulis posted a double-double with game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds to pace UW-Green Bay. Amanda Popp added 12 points, eight boards and three steals.
Cleveland State plays its second (and final) home game in January when it hosts UW-Milwaukee on Saturday (Jan. 14) at 3:00 p.m. The pregame ceremony will feature a special presentation honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in conjunction with the Horizon League and Marion Sterling Elementary.
