CLEVELAND -
Cleveland State topped Mercyhurst, 61-58, on Monday night in the Wolstein Center in the first of two exhibition contests for the Vikings. Erin Martin led CSU with 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Both teams shot just 32 percent from the floor as they struggled to find any offensive rhythm. The Lakers held a 51-39 advantage on the boards, but the Vikings offset that by turning 21 Mercyhurst turnovers into 18 points. CSU also knocked down eight three-pointers to just three for the Lakers.
Brittany Korth chipped in 15 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Vikings, while Dominique Butler tallied 10 points and six boards.
"We have a lot of potential, but we need to learn to be patient and execute better," CSU head coach Kate Peterson said. "I thought we did a nice job to start the game and then got in a big hurry offensively. Dominique really made some huge plays for us tonight when we needed them and was a huge presence defensively."
Mercyhurst's Julie Anderson led all players with 26 points and 19 rebounds. She was 9-for-13 from the field and 8-for-10 from the line in addition to corralling nine offensive rebounds. Cassie Seth added 13 points and eight boards.
Cleveland State closes out its exhibition schedule against the Ohio Legends on Monday, Nov. 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the Wolstein Center.
