YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -
It wasn't pretty, but Cleveland State (10-10, 7-2 HL) won at Youngstown State (2-19, 0-10 HL) for just the fourth time in 17 tries, defeating the Penguins 56-51 on Thursday night in the Beeghly Center. With her basket at the 10:15 mark of the first half, senior Shannon Sword (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) became the 18th player in school history to record 1,000 career points.
The teams combined for 38 turnovers and CSU shot 34.0 percent (17-50) from the floor, while limiting YSU to just 29.5 percent (18-61). In addition, the Penguins went just 8-for-18 from the free throw line (44.4 percent), while the Vikings -- who never trailed -- were a solid 17-for-24 (70.8 percent), including 7-of-10 in the final two minutes to preserve the victory.
"The fact that we continue to find a way to win is very important," CSU head coach Kate Peterson said. "It's not exactly how I would have drawn it up, but I'll take every game this way as long as we come out with a win."
Senior Ashley Schrock (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) paced CSU with 13 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals. She leads the team with seven double-doubles. Junior Maria Rickards (New Albany, Ind./New Albany) added 11 points, while sophomore Erin Martin (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) tallied nine points and six steals.
YSU's Cathy Hanek led all players with 15 points.
Cleveland State is in action again on Saturday, Feb. 7 when the Vikings host Butler at 7:00 p.m.
