INDIANAPOLIS -
Butler defeated Cleveland State 70-63 on Thursday night in a game that wasn't as close as the final score indicated. The Bulldogs led by 19 points with 2:20 remaining and Vikings closed the gap after both teams emptied their benches. With its fourth loss in a row, CSU (12-14, 9-6 HL) falls to fourth in the Horizon League, setting up a rematch with Butler (12-14, 8-7 HL) next Thursday in Cleveland in a conference quarterfinal contest.
The Bulldogs led 33-23 at the half and turned 20 Viking turnovers into 29 points for the game. In addition, Butler shot 50.0 percent (26-52), while CSU converted just 41.8 percent (23-55) of its attempts.
"Butler changed the style of the game by coming out in a zone defense tonight after playing man when we won the first meeting," CSU head coach Kate Peterson said. "I thought we played much less aggressively on offense and that indecision resulted in turnovers that led to easy lay-ups."
Senior Shannon Sword (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) paced the Vikings with 16 points and six rebounds. Senior Karyn Woloszynek (Garfied Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) added 11 points and seven boards.
Butler senior Nancy Bowden nearly recorded a triple-double with 12 points, 12 assists and eight steals, while Cortney Urquhart led all players with 17 points.
Cleveland State closes out the regular season on Saturday when the Vikings travel to Wright State for a 7:00 p.m. game.
