CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team remained perfect in Horizon League play Wednesday, picking up a 4-3 victory over Youngstown State. With the win, the Vikings are now 7-11 overall this season and 4-0 in league play.
"This was a great college tennis match, the energy from the crowd was definitely the difference tonight," head coach
Brian Etzkin said. "I was proud of the guys for battling back from being down multiple times throughout the match, and we were able to win all four three-set matches which proved to be the difference. We had a lot of clutch points in huge moments, including Nico coming up with three huge returns in a row to clinch the match for us."
After dropping the doubles point and the first singles match, the Vikings were finally able to put a point on the board from
Lincoln Battle at the top of the lineup. Battle earned a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles to remain perfect against #HLTennis opponents this season.
The Vikings then evened the score at 2-2 with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win from
Maxime Aremon at No. 6 singles, before YSU was once again able to gain a 3-2 edge with a win at the No. 5 spot.
Cleveland State knotted the score with a win from
Carl Gedlitschka then, as he picked up a 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles to improve to 4-0 against league opponents, leaving the No. 4 match as the last one on court.
Nico Jamison was able to clinch the match for the Vikings, picking up a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 win to remain perfect in Horizon League play this year.
The Vikings will return to action on Saturday, April 5, hosting Chicago State and Mercyhurst in a doubleheader at the MMTP.
