YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team capped off a perfect Horizon League slate Saturday, picking up a 5-2 victory at Youngstown State. With the win, the Vikings are now 12-11 overall this season, and finished #HLTennis play with an 8-0 record.
This marks Cleveland State's fourth undefeated league slate over the last six seasons.
"I'm very proud of the team for the win and how hard they competed. They refused to believe this match was unimportant, even though the result wouldn't change a thing in the standings. That's part of our culture and it makes me proud to coach these guys and those that came before them!" head coach
Brian Etzkin said.
After dropping the doubles point, the Vikings evened the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles from
Maxime Aremon, while a 7-5, 6-1 win from
Devin Boyer at the No. 6 spot gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead.
Cleveland State then extended its lead to 3-1 with a 7-6, 6-4 win from
Lincoln Battle at the top of the lineup, while a 7-6, 7-6 victory from
Cole Chappell at No. 3 singles clinched the match for the Vikings.
"Lincoln had a tremendous regular season, beating all of the No. 1 guys twice, and I'm proud of that effort. Cole has also come a long way and today got one of his best clinches of his career," Etzkin said.
Nico Jamison added on another point for the Vikings with a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0(7) win at No. 4 singles, putting the final score at 5-2 Cleveland State.
The Vikings will open Horizon League Championship play as the No. 1 seed in North, beginning with a semifinal contest on Saturday, April 26.
