CSU-St. Bonaventure Results
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's tennis team earned its first 7-0 sweep of the season, defeating St. Bonaventure Saturday afternoon. The Vikings, who won all three doubles matches for the first time this year, are now 2-3 on the season.
"This was a good team win for us, I feel like our team is building and getting better every time we step on the court," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We are a young team and we are learning how to do things right every day and we are getting closer to where we want to be as a team. The top four singles matches were very competitive for us today, and after we got through some tight points we were able to control the matches and earn the victories."
Matt Ford posted his third straight singles victory at the No. 5 position Saturday, claiming a 6-2, 6-3 win over Javier Ortiz. Yannick Goossens also started a winning streak, posting his second singles victory over the past two matches, earning a 7-6 (15-13), 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.
Ali Shabib, who played at No. 1 singles once again for the Vikings, claimed his first victory of the spring season, earning a 6-4, 6-0 win over Oscar Yanez. Jorg Van Der Vloet and Jay Jones also posted their first singles victories of the spring against the Bonnies, Vloet claiming a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles and Jones earning a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
The final singles win for Cleveland State came from Matt Kuelker at No. 2 singles, as he posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Luis Guevara.
To start the match, CSU was able to claim the doubles point for just the second time this season, as the Vikings swept all three doubles matches. Shabib and Goossens teamed up for an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Kuelker and Vloet earned an 8-5 win at No. 2 and Ford and Ben Shklyar claimed an 8-2 win at the No. 3 spot.
"I thought our doubles teams looked good today, they are always improving and moving in the right direction," Etzkin said. "We switched up the doubles lineup today and everyone played well together. Now we have a chance to put it on the line again tomorrow at Buffalo."
Cleveland State will now take on Buffalo at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 19).
