CLEVELAND, Ohio - Behind Shalonda Winton's second double-double of the season and a 45-point second half team performance, the Cleveland State women's basketball team was able to get back on the winning track Monday evening, as they claimed a 66-56 victory over Ohio.
Winton, who tallied 19 points and 12 rebounds, now ranks 16th all-time at CSU with 525 career boards. The Viking offense was helped by the trio of Destinee Blue, Takima Keane and Honesty King, as they also scored in double figures against Ohio. Blue added 14 points and three rebounds, Keane posted 13 points, five assists and two steals and King tallied 11 points and two steals.
After going into halftime down by six (27-21), CSU was able to outscore the Bobcats 45-29 during the final 20 minutes to claim the 66-56 victory and improve to 3-4 on the season. Ohio falls to an identical record of 3-4.
Ohio controlled the game during the opening portion of the second frame, gaining their largest lead of eight points (37-29) at the 14:10 mark. The Vikings responded with a 9-0 run sparked by a Keane three-pointer to give CSU its first lead since the 8:37 mark of the first half.
After Ohio regained a one-point lead with a layup at the 9:27 mark, Cleveland State went on a 7-0 run over the next minute to claim a lead that they would hold for the remainder of the contest. The Bobcats were able to close the gap to three points with 3:28 left to play, as Ohio went on a 6-0 run before Winton extended the CSU lead to five points once again with a layup at the 2:25 mark.
The Vikings were able to put the game away during the final 1:36 as CSU went on an 11-4 run to clinch the 10-point victory. All of Cleveland State's final 11 points came at the free throw line, as the Vikings shot 76-percent from the line (16-21) during the contest.
CSU was able to hold Ohio to a .324 (22-68) clip from the field tonight, while the Vikings shot 51-percent from the floor (24-47). Cleveland State forced 18 Bobcat turnovers, 12 of which came during the second half, while the Vikings marked eight steals.
Cleveland State returns to action this Saturday (Dec. 10) as the Vikings travel to Toledo for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
