Cleveland, Ohio - Take away the 200 back and the 1-meter diving events, and it really was a perfect day for the Cleveland State men's swimming diving team as they knocked off Green Bay, 158-84, on Saturday (Oct. 22) afternoon in the Horizon League opener for both teams.
Graham Thoresen was one of several individuals who produced brilliant performances. He won the 500 free (4:46.56) and 1,000 free (9:55.49).
Nathan Grant continued his outstanding start to his collegiate career, winning the 200 free (1:42.41), ahead of teammate Berry Thompson (1:44.72), as well as the 200 breast (2:10.47) by over seven seconds.
The Vikings had another one-two finish in the next event, the 50 free. Justin Hill touched first (20.93) and Alex Lewis was right behind him (21.77).
Cleveland State did one better in the 200 IM, placing the top three finishers.
Justin Kermack (1:57.29), Jon Querciagrossa (2:01.52) and Ryan Blankenship (2:01.92) all touched before a Green Bay swimmer.
Querciagrossa picked up another second place finish, narrowly finishing behind Thoresen in the 500 free (4:46.83).
Kermack won his second title of the day in the 200 fly (1:53.22).
Thompson (45.67), Hill (47.07) and Grant (47.16) were the first three to touch in the 100 free, racking up 16 points for Cleveland State.
Green Bay's Matt Hollub (1:57.44) won the 200 back, but Ryan Blankenship (1:58.94) and Brian Ferro (1:59.19) were the next two to touch.
The Vikings also picked up a pair of relay wins, in addition to strong diving performances.
Josh Gonzalez, the league's `Diver of the Week', won the 3-meter (316.95) event and placed second in the 1-meter (299.77) event. Matt DiMasso placed fourth on both boards.
With back-to-back dual meet victories under their belt, the Vikings are off from competition this week. They'll be back in action on November 4th when they travel to Columbus to take on Ohio State, Denison and Virginia Tech.
