CLEVELAND, Ohio – Matthew Schaeffer has been named an Assistant Coach of the Cleveland State men
's and women
's swimming teams, as announced by head coach
Trent Richardson.
"I am thrilled to have Matt join our staff at Cleveland State," said Coach Richardson. Matt is a promising young coach who is always looking for new ways to improve and help his athletes with their goals in and out of the pool. His background in data science along with his passion for innovation and evidence-based coaching will be a great resource for our team."
Schaeffer arrives after spending the last two seasons at Case Western Reserve University. In his two seasons, he assisted in 19 All-Americans (12 from the women's team and seven from the men's team).
"Thank you to Coach Richardson for giving me this great opportunity," stated Schaeffer.
"I am thrilled to join the Cleveland State Swim & Dive program. I am looking forward to working with the dedicated student-athletes on the team and contributing to the culture here at CSU."
Both seasons, the Spartans finished top 35 nationally with each team
's best finish coming in his first season: women
's team 17th and the men
's team 25th (best finish in 27 years).
Schaeffer began his coaching career at Connecticut College for two seasons, aiding in four All-Americans, including the 2024 CSCAA Division III Swimmer of the Year. Outside of the pool, he was instrumental in ten athletes earning CSCAA Scholar All-American recognition.
Schaeffer, an Ohio native, earned a Bachelor of Arts in data science at Wittenberg University in 2022.
