OLEAN, N.Y. - Cleveland State headed to New York for two matches this weekend and came away with a 7-0 triumph at Niagara on Saturday and a 6-1 victory at St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon.
The Vikings, who have now won four straight, improved to 5-1 this season.
"I thought this was a really good weekend for us and we played well against two quality teams," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "We experimented with a couple different lineups to give some guys a break and I think we got to see what kind of depth we have on this team. We had a lot of different players step up in the lineup and make contributions and I think that will only help in the long run.
"Against St.Bonaventure today, I thought we really grinded it out. We were down in some matches and it looked kind of bleak, but our guys really turned it on in the third sets. We looked strong at the end of the match and appear to be in great shape."
In the win over Niagara, CSU won all nine matches with a new lineup as Phil Orno, who usually plays No. 1 singles and doubles, was given a break.
Rob Fox and John Haley stepped up to play No. 1 doubles and picked up an 8-3 win, while Yannick Goossens and Chris Klepatz won at No. 2 doubles, 8-5. Ryan Hamning, Orno's normal partner at No. 1 doubles, teamed with Jay Jones to win at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.
CSU then won four of the six singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-2, 6-2 win by Jones at No. 6 singles that clinched the match.
"One of the highlights for me was watching Jay clinch the match against Niagara," Etzkin said.
CSU had to battle against the Bonnies today as SBU picked up a win at No. 1 doubles. However, the Vikings rallied with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to pick up the doubles point.
Orno teamed with Aris Spirtos at No. 3 doubles for an 8-1 win.
"A lot of people might think that Phil dominated at No. 3 doubles, but Aris played really well and they fed off each other," Etzkin said.
Haley (No. 4) and Klepatz (No. 5) won their singles matches in straight sets, while the other four went the distance.
The Vikings are back in action two times next weekend with matches at IPFW on Friday (Feb. 12) and at Dayton on Saturday (Feb. 13).
