CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team had another solid all-around performance on Tuesday night (Nov. 30), sweeping Canisius, John Carroll and Notre Dame College to win the City College Meet, held in the Busbey Natatorium. CSU defeated Canisius, 179-64, beat John Carroll, 200-41, and handed Notre Dame College a 198-40 loss to improve to 9-1-1 on the season.
"The men had a terrific meet," head coach Wally Morton said. "And what made it such a success was that so many of our depth swimmers stepped up and had very good performances."
Justin Hill had one of the most successful meets, winning the 50 free in 20.52, the fourth best time in CSU history, and helping the 200 medley (1:34.76) and 200 free (1:24.59) relay teams to first place finishes. He also finished second in the 100 free, coming in just behind fellow Viking Berry Thompson (45.24) at 46.68.
"Justin Hill was the swimmer of the meet," Morton said. "He had some of the fastest splits of the year, and just looked tremendous tonight."
A number of other Vikings have standout meets. Travis Lombardozzi won the 100 fly in 52.25. Justin Kermack took first in the 400 IM, winning in 4:04.51. Matt DiMasso won the 3-meter dive, scoring 283.60 points, while Josh Gonzalez won the 1-meter dive (295.20). Deni Gasparin was also on the winning 200 medley relay squad and placed first in the 100 breast (57.13).
Graham Thoresen won the 500 free (4:47.51) and Mark de Swardt was on both winning relays and took first in the 200 free (1:42.98).
"Overall we had some really good performances," Morton said. "I'm happy with the progress our men's team has made this season."
One final swimmer who had a noteworthy meet was Matt Falgoust, who placed third in the 200 free and 100 back and helped his 200 free relay team to a second place finish. He was also on the 200 medley relay squad that placed fourth.
"Matt is a walk-on who has worked extremely hard this fall," Morton said. "He has the ability to help us if he keeps working hard. If we're going to win the the Horizon League championship, we will need our depth swimmers to contribute, and Matt did that tonight."
Thompson, de Swardt and Brian Ferro will travel to Columbus on Thursday to compete at the USA Swimming National Championships, which run from Dec. 2-4. The rest of the team will be off until Jan. 8, when the Vikings will resume their 2010-11 campaign at the Holiday Invitational.
