EVANSTON, Ill. - The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team finished the three-day Northwestern TYR Invitational on Sunday (Nov. 21) in second place overall. The Vikings scored 807 points, trailing only Northwestern (1,155) and leading Kenyon (665.5), UIC (505) and North Dakota (459.5).

"I thought this was the greatest combined effort of diving and swimming at a three-day invitational in the history of the program," head coach Wally Morton said. "Top to bottom, without any exceptions, we had great performances from everyone on our roster."

The biggest highlight of the day was Mark de Swardt's win in the 1,650 freestyle. The junior won the race in 15:25.47, which qualifies as an NCAA `B' cut in that event. Berry Thompson also brought home an individual win, taking the 100 free in 45.25.

Other key performances for CSU included Alex Lewis placing third in the 50 fly (22.72), Zvonimir Androic taking third in the 200 back (1:52.95), Brian Ferro's third place result in the 200 breast (2:06.06) and Justin Kermack finishing fifth in the 200 fly (1:51.80).

Josh Gonzalez led the men in the platform diving competition, tallying 228.55 points to place second overall.

"We had some fast swimming, some good performances and we had fun doing it, which is the key," Morton said. "I'm very pleased with the team. This was a great weekend for our program."

Up next for the Vikings is the City College Meet, hosted by CSU on Tuesday, Nov. 30. Cleveland State will compete against Canisius, Notre Dame (OH) and John Carroll, with the diving events scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and the swimming events set for 5:00 p.m.
