VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team emerged victorious in its first road test of the season, defeating Horizon League opponent Valparaiso, 131-69, on Friday (Oct. 22).
"Overall our swims were very solid," head coach Wally Morton said. "Given that we were swimming in a difficult pool to compete in and that we were on the road, I thought we did very well today."
Cleveland State won every event except the 200 IM, with several Vikings picking up multiple individual wins.
The closest race of the day was in 100 fly, where freshman Justin Kermack barely beat out teammate Berry Thompson, winning at 51.82 to Thompson's 51.90.
Alex Lewis edged out fellow Viking Justin Hill in the 50 free. Lewis clocked in at 21.42, while Hill placed second with a time of 21.52.
"Our preparation was good and our warm-ups were good," Morton said. "All around we did a great job. We played around with who competed in certain events to see what we had, and I am very pleased with the versatility shown by our athletes today."
The Vikings (3-0, 1-0 HL) will compete again tomorrow (Oct. 23), traveling to Green Bay for another Horizon League contest. That meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. EDT.
"We have to get ready for Green Bay now, a team for whom we have tremendous respect," Morton said. "Green Bay's men are usually very tough and well-prepared, and this will be a good challenge for our team."
