CHICAGO, Ill. - Kailey Klein recorded her 10th career double-double and her third straight with 26 points and 11 rebounds, helping lead Cleveland State to a 73-64 win over UIC on Saturday afternoon at the UIC Pavilion.
The win improves the Vikings to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the league, while the Flames fell to 6-9 and lost for the first time in league play this season (3-1).
Angel Roque scored 12 points off the bench, the only other CSU player to reach double figures as the Vikings had balanced scoring all afternoon.
Stephaine Crosley added nine points and eight rebounds, while Shawnita Garland had eight points, a career-high eight assists, four rebounds and three steals.
UIC led the entire first half, but a Klein three-pointer with four seconds left allowed the Vikings to go to the locker room with the game tied at 32-32.
Neither team was able to pull away in the second half with the Flames taking a five point lead (49-44) about seven minutes it. However, CSU used a 7-0 run, capped by a four-point play from Angel Roque, to assume a 50-49 lead with 11:40 left.
Six more ties followed until another Roque three-pointer gave CSU a 60-57 advantage with 5:34 to play.
The teams traded baskets before a Klein layup in the paint extended CSU's lead to five points (64-59) with 1:47 to play. A Jasmine Bailey basket was answered when Garland connected on an eight-foot jumper from the baseline, keeping CSU's lead at seven.
However, Bailey responded with a three-point play on the other end and the Vikings turned the ball over on the inbounds with 30 seconds to play.
UIC missed a three-pointer and Crosley grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled, sending the 47-percent free throw shooter to the line where she calmly sank both ends of the one and one.
The Flames hurried up court and again missed a three-pointer with Klein corraling the rebound and being intentionally fouled. She hit both free throws and Roque split a pair after another UIC foul, sealing the win.
CSU held a 36-31 advantage on the glass and were 19-of-23 at the free throw line for a season-best .826 percentage. The Vikings also shot .444 (24-54) from the field.
The Vikings are back in action on Thursday (Jan. 14) when CSU begins a three-game homestand with a 7:00 p.m. contest against Butler at the Wolstein Center.
