Women's Tennis Bounces Back In Afternoon At BGSU Invitational

The Cleveland State women's tennis team righted the ship after a rough morning, winning four singles matches in the afternoon at the BGSU Invitational on Saturday.

Making adjustments, the Vikings made won all of their afternoon singles matches after losing all of their matches in the first round.

Maria Lazaris recorded her first career singles win in a victory over Hulett of IUPUI, 6-2, 6-0 in Flight 3. The win came after a loss to Pleiman of Xavier in the morning.

Catrine Bjerrehus (Flight 1), Nicole Janek (Flight 4) and Sanda Bjelan (Flight 5) also won in the afternoon. Fighting illness, both Charlotte Gibbons and Denisa Muntean withdrew from their singles flights, but were able to compete in doubles and will participate in tomorrow's matches.

“It was a tough morning for us," assistant coach Jay Tee said. "The girls responded well and really played some great tennis. We've been talking about improvements and this was a good example today."

The Vikings went winless in doubles, but the teams of Bjerrehus and Bjelan (Flight 1), Lazaris and Gibbons (Flight 2) and Janek and Muntean (Flight 4) will compete in the consolation bracket tomorrow.

“We were down early, but things really turned around," Tee said. “This was a good learning experience for the team and we can definitely use this for tomorrow."
