CLEVELAND, Ohio - Third-seeded Cleveland State made 11-of-15 from three-point to earn an 80-60 victory over sixth-seeded UIC in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Speedway Horizon League Championship on Wednesday night in the Wolstein Center.
CSU, which improved to 19-12 overall, advances to the semifinals to face seventh-seeded Milwaukee, which upset second-seeded Butler, 53-52, on Wednesday.
The semifinal round will be in Green Bay if the Phoenix defeat Detroit tonight. If the Titans upset the Phoenix, the semifinals would be here in Cleveland.
UIC concludes its season at 14-16.
"Our players came out really focused tonight and I could really see a difference in their eyes tonight," head coach Kate Peterson Abiad said. "We entered this game with a clear vision and did what we needed to do tonight.
"Overall, I was very pleased with the way we played. We hit big shots and competed at a high level which is what you need to do at this time of the year."
Kailey Klein led the Vikings with 21 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Jessica Roque added 18 points and four assists.
Dominique Butler added nine points and six boards, as CSU held a 42-31 advantage on the glass.
The Vikings hit 11-of-15 from three-point, the second best percentage in a game in school history (.733).
Jessie Miller's 16 points led the Flames.
With the score tied at 27-27 with 5:56 to play in the opening stanza, the Vikings closed the half on a17-5 run, taking a 12-point advantage (44-32) into the locker room.
CSU proceeded to open the second half on a 17-0 run, assuming a 29 point lead (61-32) with 14:28 to play on a Roque three-pointer.
The lead swelled to as many as 32 points.
CSU outscored the Flames in the paint, 32-18.
