CLEVELAND, Ohio - Marshall placed four players in double figures and shot a sizzling 57 percent from the field en route to a 75-61 victory over Cleveland State in nonconference action on Wednesday night in the Wolstein Center.
CSU fell to 2-4 overall, while Marshall improved to 3-4 on the season.
Angel Roque led the Vikings with a career-high 16 points, hitting four-of-five from three point. Stephaine Crosley added 14 points and six rebounds, while Kailey Klein scored 14 points, pushing her career total past the 1,600 point mark. She now has 1,601.
"This was a very disappointing effort for us, especially on the defensive end," head coach Kate Peterson Abiad. "We came out flat and had no energy and Marshall was able to take advantage of that. We never were able to recover from the tailspin at the beginning of the game.
"It was clear that their mission was to go down low on the block and we couldn't defend that all night."
Marshall jumped on the Vikings quickly, taking an 11-2 lead just five minutes in on a traditional three-point play by Alyssa Hammond.
A Stephaine Crosley layup and back-to-back three pointers by Angel Roque, sandwiched around a Marshall bucket, brought the Vikings back to within three points (13-10) with 10:47 left in the half.
However, Marshall used an 11-2 run to push the lead up to 12 points (24-12) before settling on a 36-25 halftime advantage.
Marshall scored 24 of its 36 points in the paint in the first half, shooting 17-of-31 (.548) from the floor.
A 13-4 run by the Thundering Herd to open the second half pushed their lead to 20 points (49-29) on a transition layup from Chantelle Handy and the Thundering Herd pushed the lead to as many as 26 points with five minutes left.
A 16-4 run by the Vikings to close the game allowed them to slice the final deficit to 14 points.
CSU shot just .317 (19-60) from the field and the Vikings were outscored in the paint, 56-20.
Marshall also held a 43-29 advantage on the boards.
Tynikki Crook had a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead Marshall, while Alyssa Hammond scored a game-high 21 points.
The Vikings will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 5, when CSU travels to Kent State for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
