South Bend, Ind. - The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team split their decisions at Notre Dame, beating Miami (OH) 181-117 and falling to the host Notre Dame 178-120 in this afternoon's meet. The Vikings posted seven individual victories and three second place finishes on the day.
"I was very pleased with our swims today and the competitiveness of the swimming that we had today," head coach Wally Morton said. "The times were excellent for everyone today given the training that we have been doing in the past weeks. We still need to learn some about the freshmen on the squad, but it was a good showing for still being early in the season."
Jakub Dobies led the Vikings with two individual victories in the 100 breast (57.06) and the 200 breast (2:05.88). Dobies was also part of the second place 200 medley relay, teaming with Todd Winchell, Stephen Grove and Mike Marsico to finish with a time of 1:34.03.
Mark deSwardt went two-for-two on the day, winning both the 1,000 free (9:29.65) and the 500 free (4:37.13).
Along with the second place finish in the 200 medley relay, Winchell also had an individual victory in the 100 fly, finishing in 50.87. He was also the second to touch the wall in the 100 back with a time of 52.05.
"They had a 16 event format today and we don't often do that so we had to show great stamina and good conditioning to be able to come back and swim events that close together," Morton said. "Being able to come out and have such a good finish in all of the races says a lot for the team and it bodes well for us for the rest of the season."
Deni Gasparin had a first place, second place and third place finish in his races today, winning the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.68. Gasparin's second place finish came in the 200 breast (2:06.70) finishing behind Dobies, with his third place finish coming in the 100 breast (58.19).
Berry Thompson recorded another victory in the 50 free, finishing in 21.26. Thompson finished third in the 100 free with a time of 47.42. He worked with Grove, Marsico and Keith Everhart to finish third in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:12.05.
In just his second meet as a Viking, Josh Gonzalez recorded a third and fourth place finish against Miami (OH) in the 3-meter and 1-meter boards respectively, while he placed fifth in the 3-meter event and fourth in the 1-meter event against Notre Dame. He scored 254.30 points on the 1-meter board and 257.00 points in the 3-meter event.
"This was a great meet for us to come over to Notre Dame and be part of the 25th anniversary of their aquatics center," Morton said. "We were the first team to come into the building and swim 25 years ago, and it's not everyday that you can be the first team to compete in a school's new facility, so this was a special meet for CSU."
The Vikings will continue their 2009-10 season when they travel to Youngstown State on Friday (Nov. 6) to face Canisius at 5:00 p.m.
