Cleveland, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team posted seven individual first place finishes along with one relay win in their 134-105 victory over Green Bay. 2009 All-American Jakub Dobies recorded two first place finishes, after being recognized during the meet for his 13th place finish last season at the NCAA Championships.
"I thought we had a great showing during the meet today in front of all of the CSU alumni that came," head coach Wally Morton said. "I'm not too concerned about the sprint events because of the training we are doing right now the sprinters aren't in a position to perform at their best."
Dobies finished first in the 200 IM (1:58.50) and the 200 breast (2:08.54) for the Vikings, in front of over 100 CSU swimming and diving alumni that came for the dedication of the new display board in Busbey Natatorium.
Dobies was also part of the winning 400 medley relay team, working with Zvonimir Androic, Stephen Grove and Berry Thompson. The relay finished in 3:31.06, more than three seconds ahead of the second place relay.
Mark deSwardt touched first in two events for CSU, first in the 1,000 free (9:29.27) and then in the 200 fly, finishing with a time of 1:52.78. deSwardt finished second in the 200 breast with a time 2:11.50, just three seconds behind first place finisher, Dobies.
"Mark did a great job for us today," Morton said. "We swam him in different events and we took him out of the situation where he only swims distance, and he did pretty well in all of the events that we put him in."
Thompson, Androic and Graham Thoresen each recorded an individual victory for the Vikings during the meet. Thompson in the 50 free (21.28), Androic in the 200 back (1:55.11) and Thoresen coming in first in the 500 free (4:40.26). Thoresen touched second in the 1,000 free (9:48.62) behind deSwardt, and fourth in the 200 IM (2:00.79).
"Berry had a wonderful time in the 50 free," Morton said. "The time is as good as he was swimming at the end of his high school career, and this is just the first meet of his college career. This is a great way to open the season as a freshman."
Pierre De Waal took home two runner-up finishes in the 200 fly (1:55.92) and the 200 free (1:45.71). De Waal was the first Viking to touch the wall in the 200 free race.
The 400 free relay team of Thompson, De Waal, Grove and Keith Everhart finished second with a time of 3:11.65, three seconds behind the first place relay.
Josh Gonzalez led the diving events for the men, finishing second in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Gonzalez had 273.60 points in the 1-meter dive and 269.85 points in the 3-meter.
The men's swimming and diving team will continue the 2009-10 season when they travel to South Bend, Indiana on Saturday (Oct. 31) to face Notre Dame and Miami (OH) at 2:00 p.m.
