The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team showed its depth in a 146-91 win over Niagara on Nov. 7 at the Youngstown State campus. The Vikings won all but four events on the night.
Horizon League Scholar Athlete of the Month Stephen Grove recorded two individual wins in the 50 free and 200 fly. He and his CSU teammates Nedim Nisic and Deni Gasparin finished 1-2-3, respectively, in the 50 free. Grove finished in 21.77. Grove also won the 200 fly (1:59.31).
"As a team we had some really outstanding swims, especially our 400 medley relay team" head coach Wally Morton said. "This meet gave us an opportunity to swim people in other events and we were able to find out more about the strengths of our team which will help us as the season progresses."
In the freestyle events, Keith Everhart won the first race of his career with a 47.89 in the 100. He led the way for the Vikings' second 1-2-3 finish on the night, topping Marko Milenkovic (48.24) and Mike Marsico (48.61). Marsico (1:47.75) and Zvonimir Androic (1:47.90) finished back-to-back in the 200 free while Androic took second in the 500 free (4:55.63) and Colin Hanner finished runner-up in the 1,000 free (10:24.65).
In the specialty strokes, Mark deSwardt swam the team's top time of the season to win the 200 IM (1:57.39). Nisic and Winchell finished 1-2 in the 200 back with times of 1:59.19 and 1:59.45, respectively. In the 200 breast, Gasparin (2:09.40) edged out deSwardt (2:14.17) for the win.
The Vikings took first and second in both the 400 free and 400 medley relay events. In the 400 medley, Nedim Nisic, Gasparin, Androic and Milenkovic (3:32.39) held off Todd Winchell, Mark deSwardt, Travis Lombardozzi and Grove (3:37.15). The 400 free relay was nearly as close with Milenkovic, Winchell, Everhart and Marsico (3:16.61) edging out Hanner, Derek Butts, Lombardozzi and Baur (3:24.13).
In the diving events, Matt DiMasso took second in the 3-meter event (194.80) and third in the 1-meter (206.90).
The men return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 11 when they host the City College Championships. The diving competition is set to begin at 3 p.m. with swimming events kicking off at 5 p.m. from the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
