OLEAN, N.Y. - Cleveland State won the first three events and five total, but dropped a 141-100 decision at St. Bonaventure in nonconference action on Saturday afternoon.
"I have to compliment St. Bonaventure on swimming an excellent race," head coach Wally Morton said. "They swam extremely well and were really up for the meet emotionally. This is really a tough place to swim as an opponent, but they deserved to win with the way they competed."
The meet got off to a great start for CSU as the Vikings won the first three events. CSU's team of Zvonimir Androic, Marko Milenkovic, Todd Winchell and Jakub Dobies combined to post a time of 3:30.23 to win the 400 medley relay.
Mark deSwardt, the reigning Horizon League Swimmer of the Week, then won the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:37.66 and was followed by Winchell who claimed the 200 freestyle in 1:46.12, just 0.87 seconds ahead of teammate Nedim Nisic.
CSU's other two wins came from Androic in the 200 back (1:55.33) and Milenkovic in the 200 breast in 2:07.02.
"Zvonimir looked really good today," Morton said. "He swam a great leadoff leg in the 400 relay and had a tremendous swim in the 200 back.
"I was worried about this meet coming in because we competed last night and St. Bonaventure is a great program. It was a tough environment to swim in and we lacked a little bit of emotion after last nights dual victory. But half of our team is still new and they are still in the learning process."
The Vikings will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 7, when CSU travels to Youngstown State to compete against Niagara beginning at 6:00 p.m.
