CLEVELAND, OH - The Cleveland State women's basketball team recently added three student-athletes to the program as Janelle Adams (Milwaukee, Wis.), Destinee Blue (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Kaila Montgomery (Ontario, Canada) inked National Letters of Intent to attend CSU and play basketball for the Vikings beginning in the fall of 2008. CSU head coach Kate Peterson Abiad made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon.
"I am extremely excited about this year's class," head coach Kate Peterson Abiad said. "I feel all three players will help add to our overall depth and athleticism and I look forward to their contributions to the program in the coming years."
Adams, a four-year starter at King High School, averaged 15.1 points per game en route to honorable mention all-state honors as a junior. The 5'9'' guard to lead the Generals to a 21-3 record and into the state tournament, where they lost in the quarterfinals.
"The addition of Janelle to our program is significant because she is an all-around player with the skills to play at a high level," Peterson Abiad said. "We are very fortunate to add a player with her abilities and I am excited to have Janelle join our program."
"Our most significant focus was to bring in some players with height," Peterson Abiad said. "Adding Destinee and Kaila is a big step in the right direction for our program as both come from championship caliber programs.
Blue, a 6-foot-3 post player, averaged 14.1 points per game to earn fourth team all-state honors as a junior at Milwaukee Vincent H.S. She helped the Vikings to a 24-1 mark and a victory over Sheboygan North in the WIAA Division I state championship.
"Destinee will bring athleticism and height to our frontcourt," Peterson Abiad said. "Over the past three years, we have been trying to become more athletic down on the block and she will help to give us that dimension. Destinee has the ability to run the floor and is a dominating rebounder."
Montgomery is a 6-foot-1 versatile athlete who can play both inside and outside on the perimeter. She is averaging 20.4 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game this season at Waterloo Collegiate Institute. She has been part of local and regional championship teams and has played a key role in Waterloo advancing to the provincial championships.
"Kaila is a very versatile player with tremendous quickness and agility for her size," Peterson Abiad said. "She is a physical player with a scorer's mentality and will be a great fit into our system of basketball."
CSU (2-3) returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the Vikings travel to Miami (OH) for a 2:00 p.m. contest. It will be the first of five straight road games for the Vikings.
