CLEVELAND -
Cleveland State saw its losing streak grow to 10 games with a 76-52 loss to UIC on Thursday night in the Wolstein Center. The Flames knocked down 12 three-pointers to complete the season sweep.
The Vikings (3-19 overall, 1-10 Horizon) got an outstanding effort on the evening from Erica Hormig as she poured in a career- and team-best 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Erin Martin fashioned together her third double-double of the season with an 11-point, 10-rebound performance and she was joined in double-figures by Dominique Butler who had 10 points.
Chrissy Dizon and LaShonda Grant paced the Flames (11-11 overall, 7-4 Horizon) with 16 points while Jacquay Holmes chipped in 13.
Finding itself on the wrong end of a 42-25 halftime deficit, Cleveland State demonstrated resiliency as the Vikings stormed out of the intermission on an 8-0 burst to cut the UIC lead to 42-33 with 16:58 remaining. Unfortunately for CSU, the Flames had a salvo of their own as they went on a 17-2 run over the next 6:05 to put the game out of reach, 59-35.
"It looked like we were playing the first half in slow motion," CSU head coach Kate Peterson said. "We just didn't come out with any intensity. On the positive side though, we did a real nice job of getting the ball in to Erica and she responded with a great effort."
Cleveland State won the battle of the boards, 36-34, but committed 19 turnovers to only eight for UIC. The miscues proved to be the difference in the game as the Flames converted the turnovers into 30 points against just seven tallies off turnovers for the Vikings.
CSU returns to action on Saturday when the squad travels to Detroit for a showdown with the Titans. Game time at Calihan Hall is set for 2:00 p.m.
