CLEVELAND - The CSU swimming alumni in attendance witnessed the current Viking squads put on a show at Busbey Natatorium on Saturday (Oct. 29) afternoon, as the men's and women's teams cruised to victories over Canisius. The men's team claimed a 125-79 win while the women registered a 118-86 decision.

Both teams claimed wins in every event which they competed in on the day, including several first-time winners.

Freshman Katie Bellew not only registered her first collegiate win but claimed a CSU season best time as well in the 100 fly (1:00.31) before adding another win in the 100 breast (1:12.22). Freshman Sandra Bunker added her first collegiate win in the 1,000 freestyle (11:11.48) before tallying a second win in the 500 free (5:23.88). Freshman Jen MacLauchlan notched her second-career win with a season-best time in the 100 back (1:00.42).

On the men's side, freshman Volkmar Baur notched his first win in the 1,000 free (10:20.39), while sophomore Marko Milenkovic earned his first victory in the 100 free (48.42). Freshman George Chesney scored the points for the Vikings off the boards, claiming his first wins in the one-meter (230.90) and three-meter boards (234.00).

The veterans would not be removed from the action, however. For the women, senior Kirsty McKechnie tallied top marks in the 200 IM (2:14.05) and in the 100 free (55.08), while junior Marianne Lionell scored season-bests in the 50 free (24.62) and the 100 breast (1:08.09). Senior Wendy Peel added a win in the 200 free (2:04.27) and led off the winning 200 medly relay team (1:53.76).

For the men, seniors Pieter Pelser and Daniel Thomasson recorded a pair of wins each. Pelser swam to a season-best time in the 100 fly (52.58) after winning the 200 IM (1:58.75). Thomasson scored top marks in the 50 free (22.16) as well as the 500 free (4:53.04).

"This meet was a good way for us to see how we could swim in events that we don't usually swim," women's head coach Mike Lehto said. "We had a few swimmers competing out of their normal events, and they stepped up to the challenge and performed. They weren't the fastest times that I would have like to have seen, but we are headed in the right direction."

Men's head coach Wally Morton shared similar thoughts. "We were really able to find out a lot about ourselves today," he said. "Not only were we able to compete successfully swimming in some different events, but we were able to bounce back from a tough meet yesterday against Miami and perform strongly the following day. That will be a big help to us once the championships roll around."

Following the meet, all of the Cleveland State swimming and diving alumni were recognized at a reception at the natatorium.

The Vikings return to action next weekend when they travel to Wright State on Friday (Nov. 4) for a 5:00 p.m. showdown with the Raiders before heading to Xavier on Saturday (Nov. 5) for a 1:00 p.m. meet.
