CLEVELAND -
The Vikings men's swimming and diving team held very little back in their first Horizon League meet of the season, claiming nine wins en route to a 134.5-105.5 victory over UW-Green Bay on Saturday (Oct. 22) at Busbey Natatorium. The women's squad was unable to duplicate their success, however, falling in a 160-74 contest to the Phoenix.
The men's team claimed top times in all 11 of the swimming events, including three Vikings with a pair of wins each. Sophomore Dave Duecker recorded top marks in both the 200 IM (1:58.54) and the 200 fly (1:56.16), while Sophomore Johan Norling registered wins in the 50 free (21.90) and the 100 free (48.09). Junior Bjorn Schantz added top times in the 1,000 free (9:34.19) and the 500 free (4:36.73).
Seniors Daniel Thomasson and Pieter Pelser chipped in a win each, with Thomasson claiming the 200 free in 1:43.39 and Pelser taking the 200 back in 1:50.80.
"Our guys did what they needed to do to get the win today," men's head coach Wally Morton said. "It is still early in the season and we will get faster as the season goes on, but this is a nice way to start off the year."
Senior Kirsty McKechnie tallied a win in the women's 500 free (5:15.19) and added a second place time in the 200 breast (2:29.36). Freshman Jen MacLauchlan notched her first collgiate win, claiming the 200 backstroke in 2:09.96.
"We have a lot of talented freshmen on this team," women's head coach Mike Lehto said. "We are a young team but we will have a lot of success as the season goes on."
The men's squad will return to Busbey Natatorium on Friday (Oct. 28) when they host Miami (Ohio) beginning at 6:00 p.m. Both teams will then welcome back Cleveland State swimming and diving alumni on Saturday (Oct. 29) as they host Canisius on Alumni Day beginning at 1:00 p.m.
