Vikings Look To Pick Up First "W" Before Hitting The Road
Cleveland State and Bowling Green are meeting for the 11th time...the Falcons own a 7-3 margin in the series although the schools have not met since the 1987-88 season...due to final exams, the Vikings are playing their first game since Dec. 3...today is the second of three consecutive games against the Mid-American Conference (the Vikings also faced Western Michigan on Nov. 24) and the last of three-in-a-row at Goodman Arena.
Road Warriors
When they leave Monday for Central Michigan, the Vikings start a stretch when they will be out of town 16 of the next 21 days. Following trips to Mount Pleasant, Mich. and Macomb, Ill. for single games, CSU embarks for what will amount to an 11-day road trip after Christmas. On Dec. 26, the Vikings will travel to Miami, Fla. for the Gatorade Holiday Classic. The team gets back from the sun an surf at late on New Year's Eve, then turns around and heads to the frozen tundra of Green Bay, Wis. the next morning. CSU will not play in Goodman Arena again until Jan. 8.
Schrock's Doing It All
At this early juncture of the season, junior forward Ashley Schrock has emerged as one of the top all-around players in the Horizon League. The Wauseon, Ohio native is ranked among the league leaders in 10 of 12 categories, including four areas in which she's in the top five (scoring, assists, field goal pct. & free throw pct.).
Miller Returns To Old Stomping Grounds
Bowling Green Head Coach Curt Miller should be very familiar with his surroundings this afternoon. Miller served as an assistant under former Cleveland State Head Coach Loretta Hummeldorf from 1991-94. At the time he was hired, Miller was the youngest top assistant in the nation.
Trio Averaging Double-Digits
The Vikings will be tough to stop all year long if they can keep three starters scoring in double-digits. Junior forward Ashley Schrock leads the way at 15.8 ppg, senior guard Erika Roudebush stands at 14.0 ppg and junior forward Shannon Sword comes in at 11.3 ppg. The trio all currently stand in the top 13 among the league's scoring leaders. However, while the trio and junior center Karyn Woloszynek (9.0 ppg) have combined for 50.3 ppg, the other eight members of the team are averaging just 19.5 ppg.
Offense Hitting, Defense Missing
Cleveland State's 69.8 ppg scoring average (second in the Horizon League) through four games shows that the Vikings are having little trouble putting the ball in the basket. However, CSU is 0-4 for the first time in a decade due to the fact it is giving up 86.5 ppg (last in the league). The same sentiment is also reflected in the Vikings' conference standing in field goal percentage (3rd - .412) and field goal percentage defense (8th - .485).
