Cleveland State Men’s Golf Third, Two Vikings in Top Five Individually after 36 Holes at Oakland Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate

Rochester, MI-The Cleveland State men's golf team got off to a strong start in its second tournament of the opening week of the Fall 2025 Season on Saturday at the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate. Cleveland State sits in third place in the team standings at 13-over par after the first two rounds of play. The Vikings are three shots back of Toledo who is second at 10-over par and ten shots back of Butler who leads the field at 3-over par. Cleveland State posted a 9-over 293 in the first round and improved by five shots for a 4-over 288 in the second round.

Brody Simms and Dillon Pendergast continued their strong play individually as both sit in the top five in the individual standings. Simms is tied for third at 2-under par, one shot back of the lead held by Green Bay's Mason Haupt and Notre Dame's Peyton Blackard at 3-under. Pendergast is tied for fifth at 1-under, two back of the lead. The Viking duo are part of a group of only five players who finished in red figures through two rounds on a difficult day for scoring.

Simms is looking to continue his positive momentum after picking up his first collegiate victory on Tuesday at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational. He started strong in the opening round with a birdie on no. 6, his second hole of the day. Bogeys on holes 9 and 13 dropped him back to 1-over before back-to-back birdies on hole 16 and 17 got him back into red figures. He followed with three straight pars before a birdie at the third hole helped him close with a 2-under 69. In the second round Simms added three more birdies in his first 14 holes to stretch it to 5-under par, before a string of three straight bogeys on holes 1-3 dropped him back to 2-under after a second round even par 71.

Pendergast opened with a 1-over 71 where he carded four birdies and five bogeys. He posted three birdies in a four-hole stretch from holes 7-10. He caught fire in the second round where he added four more birdies in addition to the highlight of the day, a hole-out eagle 2 on the par-4 17th hole. Pendergast was one of seven players in the field to make an eagle on day one. He finished the second round at 2-under 69 to jump into red numbers at 1-under for the tournament.

Dominik Cosic sits just outside the top 20 in the individual race at 5-over for the tournament. Cosic opened with a 3-over 74 and improved by a shot in the second round of the day finishing at 2-over 73. Cosic carded three total birdies on the day.
Trace Gibson is tied for 48th after rounds of 78-75 to sit at 11-over for the tournament. Ryan Dinan is 71st at 18-over par after posting scores of 79-81 on Saturday.

 The Vikings tied for first in the field on the Katke Course's par-5's finishing with a 5.03 scoring average. Cleveland State was fourth on the par-4's and fifth on the par-3's. CSU finished third in the field with 25 total birdies on the day.
Individually, Simms took advantage of the par-5's finishing tied for first in the field at 4-under. Pendergast was tied for fourth on the par-4's at even par and tied for fifth on the par-3's at 1-under. Pendergast also tied for fourth in the field with eight total birdies and Cosic finished tied for fifth with 26 pars.

The final round will feature tee times off the first and 10th tees. Cleveland State will be off in the back end of the order by nature of its third-place position in the team standings. The Vikings will be paired with the two other top three teams in Toledo and Butler with starting times ranging from 9:10 to 9:50 a.m. Live scoring will be available on Scoreboard Live throughout the final round.
