Batavia, OH-The Cleveland State men's golf team sits tied for fifth after a 4-over par 288 in the first round of the NKU Jewell Invitational on Monday. IU Indianapolis leads the 10-team field at 2-under through the first 18 holes.
Two student-athletes are in the top ten in the individual standings as
Mason Frazier and
Alex Anderson both carded rounds of 1-under 70 to sit in a tie for eighth place. Sam Mortell of Miami (OH) leads the way after a 3-under 68. Frazier finished the day with four birdies against three bogeys, including a 1-under 34 on the back nine. Anderson, playing as an individual, started on the sixth hole and was on fire early with three birdies in his first four holes. He recorded two bogeys on the back nine but finished his day with five consecutive pars to remain in red numbers.
Dillon Pendergast is in a pack of players three shots back after an even par 71 which puts him tied for 19
th place. Pendergast recorded three birdies on the day along with two bogeys and a double.
Other lineup scores for the Vikings included
Andrew Kaye with a 2-over 73 good for a tie for 31
st place.
Brody Simms posted a 3-over 74 and is tied for 47
th place and
Dominik Cosic finished at 4-over 75 which is tied for 57
th place.
Ryan Dinan posted a solid opening round of 1-over 71 as an individual. Dinan is tied for 24
th place and carded two birdies and three bogeys in his first round.
Ben Scheeff, also playing as an individual, posted an 11-over 82 and sits in 82
nd place.
Cleveland State held its own despite tough scoring conditions. The Vikings led the field with 18 birdies in the first round. Cleveland State fared well on the par-5's at Elks Run Golf Club, pacing the field with an 8-under total. The Vikings also tied for first with Robert Morris on the par-3's finishing at 3-over on the day.
Kaye tied for first in birdies with five total in round one, with Simms and Frazier right behind tied for third with four apiece. Frazier led the field in par-3 scoring finishing at 2-under for the day with Anderson and Pendergast tied for second at 1-under. Kaye and Pendergast are each tied for fourth place on the par-5's with each finishing 2-under.
The second and final round of the tournament is scheduled for Tuesday. Play is scheduled to begin with a noon shotgun start with the Cleveland State lineup teeing off on holes 5-8. Individuals will be scattered throughout the back nine. Live scoring will be available on Scoreboard Live throughout the day.
