Howey In the Hills, FL-The Cleveland State men's golf team sits in fourth place in the team race after the first round of the Horizon League Championship at Mission Resort. High winds and dry conditions in the afternoon made for a difficult day for scoring. The Vikings posted a 13-over par 301 and are six shots back of Wright State who leads the field at 7-over.
Andrew Kaye had the low round of the day for the Vikings with an even par 72. Kaye sits in fourth place in the individual race and is one of only four student-athletes at par or better after 18 holes. IU Indy's Titus Boswell leads the field after firing a 3-under 69. Kaye played steady golf in the first nine holes starting his day with eight straight pars. He carded three birdies on the back nine finishing at 1-under 36 to close the day.
Dillon Pendergast and
Mason Frazier are each tied for 15
th after rounds of 4-over 76. Pendergast posted three birdies on the day and Frazier carded two. Pendergast closed his round with an even par 37 on the back nine.
Brody Simms is tied for 24
th after a 5-over 77. Simms posted two birdies on the back nine and closed with a 1-over 38.
Ryan Dinan carded an 83 in his opening round and is tied for 46
th to complete the Cleveland State lineup.
The Vikings took advantage of the El Campeon course's par-5's as Cleveland State tied for the best score in the field finishing 5-under on the par-5's in the opening round. Cleveland State also finished third in the field in birdies with 12 combined on Saturday.
Individually Kaye finished tied for fifth in the field on the par-3's and par-5's. He finished at even par on the par-3 holes and 2-under on the par 5's. Simms tied for ninth on the par-5's finishing at 1-under for the day. Kaye finished tied for third in pars with 13 and Pendergast tied for fourth in birdies with three.
Round two shifts to morning tee times for the men's teams. The Vikings will tee off on the tenth hole starting at 8:20 a.m.
