Simms Finishes Runner-Up, Cleveland State Men’s Golf T3 at Tom Tontimonia Invitational

Westlake, OH-The Cleveland State men's golf team fought through difficult conditions in finishing tied for third in the Tom Tontimonia Invitational. The host Vikings tallied a 13-over par team total which tied Purdue Fort Wayne for third place. Green Bay took home the tournament title finishing at even par after a stellar 8-under par final round. Oakland finished second at 6-over.

The tournament featured perfect weather on Monday for the first 36 holes, however on Tuesday a steady rain fell throughout the final round which softened the course and made conditions difficult. Cleveland State finished with a 5-over 289 in the final round for an 865 team total.

Brody Simms continued his stellar play as he finished the tournament at 4-under par, one of just six student-athletes to break par for the event. Simms and Green Bay's Mason Haupt put on a show throughout the final round with both players trading great shots down the stretch. Simms took the outright lead with a superb tee shot on the 256-yard par-3 14th hole. He converted a short birdie putt to take a one-shot lead.

Simms widened the lead with a tap-in birdie on the par-5 15th hole after a well-placed chip shot. The margin was two strokes headed to the short par-4 16th hole. Haupt punched back with an up-and-down birdie there, and when Simms' approach shot sailed over the back of the green he settled for a two-putt bogey which sent both players to the 17th tee tied at 4-under par.

Both players made par at the 17th which set the stage for the 590-yard par-5 finishing hole. Both players found themselves short of the green in two. Simms hit his approach first, landing just shy of the front edge of the green. Haupt followed with a chip shot that landed underneath the hole about six feet away. Simms' birdie putt missed just wide, and Haupt sealed a one-shot victory by making his six-footer to close out his first collegiate tournament victory.

Simms finished the event with rounds of 70-70-69 scoring in red figures all three times. This marks his third top five finish in Cleveland State's four fall events. He finished the event with 10 total birdies and tied for fifth place in the field with 38 pars.

Dominik Cosic finished with a 2-over 73 in the final round in a tie for 23rd place. Cosic posted scores of 77-68-73 to finish the tournament at 5-over par. Dillon Pendergast posted a 3-over 74 to finish tied for 36th place. Pendergast carded rounds of 72-74-74 to post a 7-over par total.

Ryan Dinan was just behind Pendergast finishing at 8-over par. Dinan closed with a final round 73 to finish tied for 42nd place. Trace Gibson finished tied for 59th place at 12-over par after a final round 77. Ben Scheeff, playing as an individual, finished in 73rd place at 22-over par.

For the tournament, Cleveland State finished third in par-5 scoring with a 4.91 average good for a 4-under par total. The Vikings led the field with 181 total pars. Individually, Simms finished with the second lowest total in the field on the par-5's finishing 5-under par. He was also tied for sixth in the field in par-4 scoring finishing with a 3.97 average.

Cleveland State has one final fall event remaining to close out the 2025 fall schedule. The Vikings will tee it up in the Dayton Flyer Invitational which is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 20.
