Westlake, OH-The Cleveland State men's golf team battled its way to a tie for second place in the team standings after the first 36 holes of the
Tom Tontimonia Invitational. The newly renovated Lakewood Country Club showed its teeth as none of the ten participating teams broke par. The host Vikings finished at 8-over for the day, sharing second place with Green Bay. Oakland is four shots clear in first place at 4-over par.
Cleveland State carded a 9-over score of 293 in the opening round and improved by ten shots in round two finishing at 1-under 283. Dry conditions and sunny skies had the course playing firm and fast throughout the entire day providing difficult scoring conditions. The second-round score of 283 is the second lowest team total the Vikings have posted in a round this season, one shot shy of a second-round 282 at Ball State two weeks ago.
Brody Simms is the low individual scorer for Cleveland State finishing at 2-under par. Simms carded back-to-back rounds of 1-under 70 to sit in third place in the individual standings. Findlay's Cahle Roth and Oakland's Matteo Rocco share the lead at 3-under par. Simms posted seven birdies on the day.
Dominik Cosic is also inside the top 20 in the individual race at 3-over par 145 in a tie for 20
th place. Cosic posted a 6-over 77 in the first round as back-to-back double bogeys early in his round left him at 4-over par. He rebounded in the second round to the tune of a 3-under par 68, a new career best. Cosic posted three birdies in his first 12 holes and finished strong with back-to-back birdies on the 18
th and first holes to close his day. He finished the first 36 holes with six combined birdies.
Dillon Pendergast is tied for 29
th at 4-over par after posting scores of 72-74. Pendergast finished the day with five total birdies.
Ryan Dinan and
Trace Gibson are each tied for 42
nd place at 6-over par. Gibson posted a 6-over 77 in the first round and improved greatly in his second 18 holes finishing with an even par 71, his lowest score of the season. Gibson carded four birdies, including back-to-back red numbers on holes 7-8 and 11-12. Dinan posted matching scores of 74 in the first two rounds and added six birdies.
Ben Scheeff, playing as an individual, is in 72
nd place at 15-over par after rounds of 77-80.
Cleveland State scored well on the par-4's and par-5's in climbing the ladder in the team standings. The Vikings led the field in par-4 scoring with a 4.05 average and finished third on the par-5's at 3-under par. The Vikings tied for first in the field with 29 total birdies and finished second on the day with 115 pars as a team. Individually, Simms tied for first in the field on the par-5's finishing at 4-under.
The third and final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning. Play is scheduled to begin with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start. The Vikings will be paired with the other two teams joining them at the top of the standings, Oakland and Green Bay, starting on holes 1-4.
